Letter to the Editor by Ignacio Álvarez Fossi
Last Monday, 30th November, I was present at what was, if not the greatest show on earth, the most degrading that I remember: I was at the monthly meeting of Orihuela Council.
One item on the agenda involved a motion presented by the Socialist Group. The motion included 9 points, which if adopted, it was hoped, would make for greater transparency in council business & at the same time eliminate corruption. The Partido Popular Group, with an absolute majority, wrangled over I don't know which full-stops & commas they did not agree with, then announced their outright rejection of this motion. So it stopped there? No Citizens! The PSOE Spokesperson, faced with the refusal of the PP, at the same time offered to exchange her motion for the 50 point document, to the same end, published by the PP (i.e. the PP national leader). (After all, the important thing being to put an end to corruption, one way or another). Do you believe that if this PP 50 point document was adopted the PP Orihuela Ayuntamiento could continue to apply their own measures in the way that they do? Such naivety! This proposal wasn't adopted either. The PP did not explain whether their refusal was for fear that the 50 points would be inefficient in stopping corruption, or for fear of the opposite. Citizens, draw you own conclusions.
With what little smiles, with what furtive looks of complicity, with what insolence, with what immodest, with what effrontery, the councilors of the PP refused to adopt their own measures for bringing about an end to corruption!
So now, what do we, the citizens, do? Where do we turn? To who do we complain? When the excrement is up to their ears, & nothing or nobody can no longer hide the stink, will some national PP leader to tell us as always that "those are not ours, they have taken advantage of the PP, we are as much victims as you". The problem is that the council has suffered in the 23 years that the PP has been in control, & their national leaders will have to explain to us why, in all this time, they haven't taken the necessary measures to put a stop to corruption. We the citizens, for our part, can take the measures that are in our own hands: do not vote for the PP in the next municipal elections in 2011.
