Cricket comes out the winner as Torrevieja Cricket Club play their first game

Torrevieja Cricket Club finally managed to play their first ‘real’ game on Sunday 28th February at Torrevieja’s athletics stadium. Although greeted by a rather damp morning, newly-formed Torrevieja cricket club took on the might of Alicante cricket, in the form of Intellectuals Cricket Club.


Intellectuals won the toss and batted to a modest 133 off 35-overs. With a batting line-up of only 10, Torry set off in pursuit with a quiet confidence however they ran out short on the day and Intellectuals won the game. Man of the Match went to T. Standford of Intellectuals for his hard-hitting 51 runs and 3 for 15 off 3.1-overs. But this game was not about winning or loosing. At the end of the game, CRICKET was the real winner on the day, with players from various countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Ghana, Spain and the UK all taking part in this fun event.

This first game was the beginning of the foundation that Torrevieja hope to work on and build a strong cricket team to compete at league level within the Spanish system. There are still plenty of opportunities to become involved, whether a player, junior, ladies, scorer, official or just a cricket fan; all are welcome.
