Katie Reillys Golf Society Presidents Day

Friday 18th June saw 21 members and guests from Katie Reillys Golf Society head for Las Ramblas on a beautifully warm morning to compete for the Presidents Trophy. There should have been 22 of us but for some reason known only to himself, Society President Peter Deaves had deemed it necessary to attempt to cut his right index finger off the previous day with a Stanley knife and, as the wound required 11 stitches, he was unable to play.

More facilities inaugurated at Torrevieja’s Sports City

Tennis was top of the agenda on Saturday June 12 when hundreds of spectators, tennis players and government representatives made their way to Torrevieja’s Sports City to inaugurate the first of the zone’s new facilities. Mayor Pedro Hernandez and Councilor for Sports, Daniel Plaza, toured the spectacular racket sports area, which covers an area of over 30,000 square meters, with 10 tennis courts for public and club use plus a center court for competition.

Torrevieja’s Rugby Stadium inaugurated

On Saturday morning June 19, Torrevieja’s Mayor Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo along with the Sports Councillor, Daniel Plaza Montero returned to the new Sports City to inaugurate the ‘Nelson Mandela’, Stadium and to open the inaugural Torrevieja Rugby Seven’s Tournament. This impressive facility, costing around two million euros, has a capacity for 3,000 Spectators, the approval for international competition from the RUFA, an artificial grass pitch and is designed for multisports; rugby, football and cricket.

Spanish Champions from Torrevieja

The Club de Remo de la Cofradía de Pescadores returned from the Spanish Championships in Denia on the last weekend of May as Champions of Spain, not a small honour for a very new rowing club from the City of Salt. On Thursday June 3, at USP San Jaime Hospital, one of the team’s sponsors, the team and their coach Moncho Ferrer, were honoured by Torrevieja’s minister of Sport Dani Plaza and the team has now a new goal of preparing for the World Championship in Istanbul.

Torrevieja rugby and cricket teams play host to Lisburn RF & CC

Torrevieja Cricket Club continue to go from strength to strength and hot on the heals of their win last week against local rivals San Fulgencio, they hosted their first Tour Team, in the shape of Lurgan RF & CC, from Northern Ireland on Friday. Due to the whistle stop nature of the tour itself, late arrival on Thursday night for example, the game started mid afternoon for a 20-20 game, more for fun than laurels, so with absolutely nothing at stake, both sides played out an entertaining game in front of a crowd of one!
