H2O Exhibition at the Vista Alegre

Water: that most precious of commodities, is the subject mater for this year’s exhibition of entries for ‘H2O’. Sponsored by Caja Madrid, the exhibition was inaugurated by Councillor for Culture, Eduardo Dolon, José Blanco, Head of Culture Department for Caja Madrid, museum director municipal, Lola Sanchez accompanied councillors Joaquín Albaladejo, Pedro Valero and Lola Canales.

Torrevieja's Habaneras festival to be broadcast on the internet

Sometimes it’s hard to image that anything of cultural significance could possibly have taken place in Torrevieja prior to the population boom here. But we’d be wrong as the huge exception to the rule is the world renowned International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony, to be held in the Eras de la Sal from 23 to 30 July, which this year celebrates its 56th edition.

Bicycle day in Torrevieja

Fun for kids of all ages was the order of the day on Saturday morning, June 12 when 200 or more cyclists took to the streets of Torrevieja on a short 2.5 kilometre fun ride around the town centre.

Valencian Community’s most important sports centre opens its doors

Torrevieja’s new Sports City complex was officially opened on Saturday June 5, when the mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, accompanied by the Councillor for Sports, Daniel Plaza Montero, the architect who designed the project, Adolfo Rodriguez, mayors from the Vega Baja, representatives of local sporting bodies and associations plus invited groups and associations, all went on a walking tour of the entire facility.

La Mata Town Hall open for business

La Mata´s new Town Hall opened it’s doors for business on July 21 when Torrevieja’s Mayor Pedro Hernández Mateo plus his entire councillor team inaugurated the city’s first satellite Town Hall. Situated just off the main plaza in Plaza Gaspar Perelló, the building was constructed for only 3.335.310 euros as part of the Plan E program of regeneration for the construction industry.

One Hundred Thousand Euros. Yes, 100,000 euros is the amount that local performance group The Rascals have unselfishly raised over the last 16 years for many different charities and causes both locally on the Costa Blanca and for disaster relief abroad.

Another park for Torrevieja

Yet another park and garden was opened to the public this week in Torrevieja when the mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, accompanied by Eduardo Gil Rebollo Torrevieja’s Councillor for Parks and Gardens plus much of the municipal corporation, inaugurated the Plaza dedicated to the writer and poet José Manuel Caballero Jerez Bonald, who has been closely linked to the city of Torrevieja for many years due to his position as chairman of the Jury for the International Poetry Competition "Ciudad de Torrevieja".

Delfin S-61 makes more History

On June 5 and 6, the Submarine Delfin S-61 partook in a unique assignment by contacting all of the world’s other floating museums, totalling upwards of 3,000 in more than 100 countries around the globe through the world of HAM Radio. The Union of Amateur Radio of Spain came up with this idea having calculated that during this two-day weekend they could contact all other floating museums through telegraphy, telephony and Digital Systems, including the internet.

Gilbert & Sullivan spreads to Calpe

As part of its very active social scene the Gilbert & Sullivan Society in Torrevieja (GASS) organized a day trip to Calpe in support of Calpe Gilbert and Sullivan Society (CGSS) who were putting on their first full stage production of one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s entertaining comic, musical operettas.
